If the plane had travelled for a total five hours after it took off from Kuala Lumpur shortly after midnight on Saturday, it could have covered an "additional distance of about 2,200 nautical miles, reaching points as far as the Indian Ocean, the border of Pakistan or even the Arabian Sea, based on the jet's cruising speed," the Australian Financial Review reported.

"It could also have reached North Korea," the report said, harking back to myriad conspiracy theories that surfaced on the internet after the plane mysteriously disappeared.

Former British MI6 and Australian Secret Intelligence Service analyst Warren Reed said the latest development suggested it was possible the plane was diverted to North Korea.

North Korea might have the audacity to pull off something like this, however unlikely it seems,’’ Mr Reed said.

“I mean, if you combine the engine data continuing for another four hours with the fact that mobile phones still appear to be ringing out, it begs the question, no matter how improbable, that the plane has been taken over and diverted,’’ Mr Reed said (всюду выделено мной. - В.А.).
